SAINT VINCENT COLLEGE ANNOUNCES ADDITION OF MEN’S BOWLING CLUB TEAM
LATROBE, PA – Saint Vincent College is pleased to announce the addition of intercollegiate men’s bowling beginning in the fall of 2020.
The team will have club status and will be coached by Jeff Zidek, who also serves as the head coach of the college’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) women’s bowling program.
“I am excited to get started immediately recruiting for our new men’s program,” said Zidek. “There is a ton of talent in this area at the high school level, yet only one other college in Western Pennsylvania offers men’s bowling. Those bowlers will now have another outlet to continue their athletic careers at the next level.”
The program will return after a 38-year hiatus and remains the only one in Saint Vincent history to win a national title. The school’s men’s bowling team captured the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) championship in 1978, under the tutelage of the late Br. Patrick Lacey, O.S.B.
“Brother Pat would be proud to see the team making a comeback,” said Zidek. “I hope we can replicate his success.”
The last SVC men’s team competed in 1982, but the sport returned to Latrobe in 2017 with the addition of women’s bowling. The women’s team competes in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.
The NCAA does not sponsor men’s bowling, so Saint Vincent will compete independently at the club level in United States Bowling Congress (USBC) events.
Competition will begin in October 2020.
